Define Your 2021 Word of Wellness

sticky notes with words on a bulletin board

Walk before you run. That’s the way I approach goal setting — and why I start with an overarching word or concept and go from there.

Sure, FRESHJUICE + bubbly (FJAB) is about treating yourself to wellness indulgences. But, you know what? Self-care is often an indulgence for many of us (self included), given we’re all strapped for time and energy.

So, what are you going to do to address your wellness in the New Year? If you haven’t had a chance to piece together full-on goals, let’s start small. Here are my three questions to ask to help you determine your word of wellness:

  • What’s your challenge? For example, I love to workout, and I do a pretty good job with keeping my mental wellness in check. But, portion control, when it comes to food and drink, is my kryptonite.

  • Why now? We’ve all got plenty of challenges on our plate at any given time. Why do you think 2021 is the year to finally address this particular challenge? Seriously, if it’s not timely, you’re going to be less likely to do anything to address it. For me, the portion control challenge is timely, because I turn 40 this year and want to go into the next decade of my life being better about enjoying reasonable portion sizes. That is, when I have a full-size bag of Spicy Nacho Doritos in front of me, I want to have the will power to not devour every last chip.

  • What’s your word? Now, think about one overarching word that addresses your challenge. It should be a word that you can derive specific, measurable goals from. Based on everything I’ve shared, my word is “moderation.”

P.S. Looking for a personalized approach to your wellness experience? I’ve spent a decade working as a wellness journalist — visiting more than 50 spas from Vail to Vienna — and 20 years in the fitness industry. The picks for my City Wellness Guides are based on my experience.
